Find woodpecker birdhouses to attract your local wildlife

Only a few varieties of woodpeckers will live in a man-made nest box, including the Hairy, Red-headed, and Downy Woodpeckers. If you are looking for a woodpecker bird house, make sure these woodpeckers inhabit your area before purchasing, or you may end up with an empty nest!

Downy Woodpeckers are friendly little birds that enjoy people, and will remain in your yard during the winter.  If you live in the east, just provide them with a woodpecker birdhouse, or nest box, to keep them out of the cold.  The entrance hole should be 1 3/8 inches, and the box should be lined with woodchips.

Hairy and red-headed woodpeckers are much larger birds, and thus require a larger hole - 2 1/2 inches. If you can't find a birdhouse specifically for these birds, use a flicker sized box, as the hole requirement is the same.  Place the birdhouse 12 to 20 feet up, and line it with woodchips.
