Install wild bird houses to attract your favorite species

About a dozen species of wild birds can be attracted to backyard birdhouses.  Wrens are very tolerant of mankind, and a wren bird house is the easiest way to attract wrens to a small yard.  Flickers will readily accept a bird box attached to a pole among shrubs.  Only a few varieties of woodpeckers, such as the downy, hairy and red-headed woodpecker will live in birdhouses, so be sure the woodpecker you want to attract will live in one before handing over your hard- earned cash.

Bluebirds and purple martins take readily to wild bird houses, as do tree swallows, wood ducks, house finches, chickadees and titmice.  Only two owls will make use of wild birdhouses.  The saw whet owl will occupy a flicker box, and the screech owl will occupy either a flicker or wood duck house.  Starlings and English sparrows will occupy anything they can fit into, and chase other birds away with their aggressive behaviour.

Robins, barn swallows and phoebes will NOT use a birdhouse, but prefer a nesting platform placed under the eaves.  Kestrels may appear if you install an open-fronted nestbox.

As you can see, choosing wild bird houses is nowhere as easy as it seems.  Before you purchase any birdhouse or nesting platform, ensure that the species you want to attract is native to your area.  Even then, you may end up with a house full of starlings or sparrows!
