Nuts, seeds and grains that feed wild birds ....

When you feed wild birds keep in  mind that they are a bit like people.  Each different species has its own preference.  Before you buy wild bird food you might want to do some research and find out what type of foods are most appropriate to feed wild birds in your area.

In a nutshell (no pun intended) here are some pointers before you buy wild bird food.   Almost all birds will eat sunflower seeds or white millet except for cardinals, grosbeaks and cowbirds.  Juncos prefer red millet and starlings prefer peanut hearts.  Grackles and grosbeaks prefer cracked corn.  Cardinals and mourning doves prefer safflower seeds.  Seeds that are not recommended to feed wild birds are flax seeds and rapeseeds.  Most birds are simply not attracted to flax or rape.
