As bluebirds are a bit of an endangered species (thanks to an overpopulation of starlings and house sparrows) it is a good idea to build bluebird houses that will make them feel safe and secure. If you pay attention to just a few of these suggestions you will be more successful at attracting bluebirds rather than other kinds of birds. The bluebird houses that are the most appealing to bluebirds are box shaped and made of cedar or redwood. This is because bluebirds eat the bugs that nest in these types of wood. A bluebird box should never have a perch on its house as that attracts sparrows and wrens that could boss them out of their home. The nesting holes for Eastern bluebirds should have a diameter of 1 1/2 inch. Western bluebirds will use a 1 9/16 inch entrance. Bird houses that are varnished or painted will not be successful at attracting bluebirds because they find these substances toxic.
