The simplicity and beauty of an inexpensive outdoor bird house .....
When it comes to wooden bird houses you can go one of two ways. You can opt to buy one of the fancier multi-level bird houses that resemble a bird condominium or hotel, or you can go for the simplest type of outdoor birdhouse which is also known as a bird box. If your budget is limited then there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't just go for the box style outdoor bird house. Wooden bird houses don't get much simpler than this and they are beautiful because they follow the aesthetic rule of functionality following form. The simpler types are just a rectangular wooden shelter set either in a square or diamond shape with a roof that slants a certain way to shelter small birds (such as wrens) from larger birds (such as crows). They often resemble a freestanding or wall mounted mail box. Slightly more expensive but not by much (usually just a couple of dollars) is the outdoor bird house that features a wooden chalet style roof. The benefit of this type of roof is that it creates a slot shape that makes it difficult for larger birds to squeeze in on turf that belongs to the chickadees and wrens.
