bird house nesting hole sizes  ....

Before you purchase a bird house online you need to consider the size of its potential occupants.  Don't buy a bird house meant to house robins if what you are really looking for is a back yard full of chickadees.

The size of the nesting hole in the bird house is the most important consideration when you purchase a birdhouse online.  This is because the size of the hole is going to determine the type of bird you attract.  Small birds like wrens and chickadees prefer a nesting hole that is 1 1/8 inches in diameter.  Medium sized birds such as bluebirds and swallows need a hole that is an inch and a half in diameter.  Holes of two inches or more will attract starlings.  Watch out for the starlings if you are planning to attract smaller birds as they are notorious for evicting smaller tenants.

After you purchase a birdhouse online, install it in your back yard and keep a close eye on what happens.  If you find that your bird house is causing world war III then you might want to consider buying a couple of birdhouses so that each species has a home.  To find bird houses that make good homes for specific wild birds such as wrens, chickadees and bluebirds, check the online vendors listed below.
